Whenever I have a question that needs a starting point, like many other people, I started with Google. I do use few blogs before such as the blog from Ivy Wise and Ivy Coach. Since there is classmate Corynn has already written a wonderful piece on Ivy Wise as well as the blog from Ivy Coach has already been covered, I started from scratch.
Flipping few pages on Google search results, I found greatcollegeadvice.com by Mark Montgomery and his team. Mark is a previous professor and former associate dean at University of Denver, a "college insider". The blog is rich in contents with new post almost every other day or even every day. In total, there are several key categories of information:
· University/college introduction - a lot of them are done on campus and presented in a video
· Testimonial type video featuring students who have leveraged services from Mark and his team talking about values they have seen. This part appears to be a bit too commercial to me. But I can see value to potential customers. They have more desire to find out how and where to get value from GreatCollegeAdvice's services.
· Comments/explanations on selective key topics/considerations for college admissions, a lot of them are also done on campus of universities and presented in video fashion.
One attribute of this blog is the presence of rich media -- besides text content, there are way more videos posted on the blog pages than what I have seen from other websites/blogs. It can be helpful visually while the heavy wording in the beginning of each video appears to be more distracting than supporting.
Mark appears to have clients all around globe, with quite many from Hong Kong. In one of his posts, actually a video, Mark was talking about how Asian parents wanted to start college search by deciding on major. While in reality, for most schools in U.S., major is not even considered in admission. I just started my own business and no surprise, parents from China asked about major first all the time and use major to drive college decision. It is very interesting to see how he managed to handle these situations. Good learning.
