Utilization of internet in today’s college admission counselling practice is a non-reversible trend. It is a must. For today, internet plays a super important role in our practices:
Great source of information for both counselors and students:
· Over time, internet has become the almost most important and most comprehensive source of information about colleges, universities and campuses. Not only all the major universities and colleges have their own websites, there are also endless websites providing insights into each college, offering comparison and providing search functions.
· Introduction of virtue tour provides critical information while saves thousands of students a lot of time and expenses. It will be especially valuable for international students, for whom in person campus visit is even more costly and time prohibitive. So far the size of virtue tool file is too big to make it easy for international students to view cross ocean. I expect to see some optimization.
· Internet has also become the key information provider as to college admission process and requirement. Besides colleges’ official information, many high schools, counsellors and associations have also shared information and advices about college admission via their websites, via different tools/means such as podcast, blogs or their social media pages such as on Facebook or LinkedIn.
· Social Media is also an important channel to share information among existing or previous students of a given college who constantly share their college/campus experience online. For anybody who is interested in that given university/college, they for sure should not miss these more personal insights.
Great tool for communication for counselors and students
· Nowadays, school counselors send out interesting read and reminders for deadlines to their students via email, instant message, Facebook message or posts on their websites. It not only saves time and energy for counselors, it also helps to ensure that these students do receive critical information on time.
· For private practice, sometimes counselors also work from students at different locations, such as in different state or even in different country. Online chat and video conference such as via SKYPE make such interactions and working sessions feasible. It is also very beneficial for international students who can now tap into resources in U.S. that are not available to them in the past.
Great channel to promote your services and build your own professional brand
· In the past, people build their reputation via human interaction and word of mouth. Nowadays, their images are also coming from how they were portrayed in digital world, mostly, via social network. Given people are now go online to find information, opinion are formed online as well. It is very important to share your information and insights online via your own website, social media network, personal and professional such as Facebook and LinkedIn.
